Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland
A Research technologist is needed to assist in the management of the daily operations of a gnotobiotic mouse facility serving the needs of multi-disciplinary researchers on the Johns Hopkins campus. Individual will maintain, organize and keep records on germ free mouse colonies being used for biomedical research within flexible film and isocage gnotobiotic isolators. Role also involves animal weighing, performance of daily health checks, tail biopsies, ear notching or tagging, collection of blood, feces or urine, injections, administration of special diets and/or medications and assisting research personnel with termination of experiments.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintains records on animal location, care and facility environmental conditions.
Perform facility maintenance, including cleaning, sanitization and sterilization of laboratory surfaces, equipment and supplies as scheduled.
Receives and maintains adequate stock of animal care and research supplies.
Follows and regularly evaluates facility procedures, equipment, and physical areas to optimize animal welfare, personnel safety, and the conduct of research as needed.
Follow standard operation procedures and policies, communicates with facility manager and director about needed modifications
Interacts with veterinary staff as needed to ensure animal welfare.
Provides training to faculty, staff, post docs, students, and visiting scientists as needed.
May be required to carry a cellphone and be on call after hours.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
- BS/BA degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
Experience in mouse colony maintenance, in vivo models, handling and dosing of rodents and rodent necropsy is desired
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong technical and communication skills; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Experience with sterile technique, basic microbiology and PCR preferred.
Ability to work collaboratively in a research environment with individuals of varying educational and professional backgrounds (e.g., Animal Technicians, Veterinarians, Research Technicians, and Principal Investigators), a positive attitude and the ability to work as part of a team are crucial.
Demonstrated effective problem solving.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
