Johns Hopkins University Research Specialist II in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Specialist II who will perform laboratory procedures, data processing, and laboratory maintenance following common or established protocols and procedures.

The Single Cell & Transcriptomics Core serves the Johns Hopkins Community as well as the world-wide scientific community. The Core provides cost effective Single Cell and Next Generation sequencing analysis enabling more researchers to access advanced transcriptomics and genomics services. The Core is a fast paced and growing lab that requires additional technicians to aid in sample processing and tracking, lab organization, primary data analysis.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the general supervision of a Core Director or Laboratory Supervisor, the Specialist is responsible for performing quality control analysis on client and Core generated RNA, DNA and library samples and returning data to clients.

  • Prepare libraries for and load, 10x Chromium, Mission Bio Tapestri, Next Generation sequencers or any newly acquired instrument.

  • Perform RNA and DNA extractions and advanced molecular biology sample processing.

  • Analyze raw sequencing data within Illumina BaseSpace software.

  • Analyze raw sequencing data for 10x methods, cell or tissue based.

  • Trains new hires on SOPs, operations, and maintenance of equipment in the core.

  • Perform general lab maintenance, including unpacking orders, signing in projects, and updating sample tracking software.

  • Perform routine maintenance on all instruments, such as cleaning/washing, calibration/system check, software updates, and power cycles.

  • Consults industry tech support to replace kits whenever something fails unexplainably and to troubleshoot what may have caused the problem and how to avoid it in the future.

  • Collaborate with clients/researchers to understand their desired project requirements and deadlines and to provide technical guidance on sample preparation for sequencing.

  • Explain any relevant methods to clients so that they can better understand the technology.

  • Communicate sequencing results and basic data analysis to researchers in a clear and concise manner.

  • Maintain and update sample submission records.

  • Help develop and implement standard operating procedures and best practices for the core facility.

  • Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring that deadlines are met, and quality standards are maintained.

  • Establish a collaborative learning environment within the lab, promoting continuous skill development and knowledge sharing.

  • Manage inventory, monitors supply levels, orders equipment, and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, and initiate the process for equipment repair when needed.

  • Teach/train students, and new technicians in the lab. Guide, direct, and facilitate problem solving for entry-level lab members on day-to-day problems.

  • Understand and use software packages used by SCTC for data analysis.

  • Adhere to all SCTC Core requirements.

  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

  • Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chromium system.

  • Hands-on experience with 10x.

Starting Salary Range: $40,900 - $71,600 Annually ($60,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
