Johns Hopkins University Research Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

The Department of Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant who will work under the direction of the Principal Investigators and Research Program Manager. The Research Assistant will assist in the coordination of activities that support a research trial within the Mid-Atlantic Center for Cardiometabolic Health Equity (MACCHE) entitled: “Understanding and Addressing Risks of Low Socioeconomic Status and Diabetes for Heart Failure” (UNLOAD-Heart Failure). UNLOAD-Heart Failure and MACCHE are led by the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity, which works to promote health equity for at-risk populations through advancing scientific knowledge, promoting sustainable changes in practice and policy, partnering with communities, raising public awareness of health inequities, and training scholars.

UNLOAD-Heart Failure is testing the effect of a multi-level community-based intervention, including problem solving training, use of community health workers and partnership with community fitness facilities to promote healthy lifestyle on outcomes in persons with low socioeconomic status, diabetes, obesity and early heart dysfunction.

The Research Assistant will work with faculty and staff from the Johns Hopkins schools of Medicine and Public Health to assist in the development and implementation of the UNLOAD-Heart Failure trial. UNLOAD-Heart Failure is a research project within MACCHE, and both are funded through a five-year National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities P50 Center Grant. The overarching goal of MACCHE is to test the effectiveness of several evidence-based strategies for improving outcomes related to cardiometabolic health (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, abnormal lipids, chronic kidney disease and related heart disease) among disadvantaged populations, using community-based and patient-centered research principles that may be translated into clinical and public health practices.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the research team in the overall implementation of the research study.

  • Facilitate communication and coordination with other research projects and cores within MACCHE.

  • Maintain knowledge of the study protocol and reporting requirements.

  • Follow federal, state and institutional laws and guidelines to access and maintain confidential records related to research patient health information.

  • Assist the Research Program Manager in generating reports for project deliverables.

  • Collect data and participate in data entry into a REDCap database for the study.

  • Attend project, center, and community meetings; assist with meeting preparation and collection and distribution of minutes.

  • Complete meeting action items when assigned, including communicating and coordinating meetings with community partners.

  • May clean data from health system and surveys prior to entry into summary tables.

  • Under guidance of co-investigators and program managers, perform literature reviews.

  • Assist in the patient recruitment process including developing recruitment materials.

  • Assist in the participant payment process and oversight including reviewing materials for accuracy.

  • Assist in the development of toolkits and other materials for dissemination of research materials.

  • Assist in the creation of summary tables and graphs for reports. May develop PowerPoint slides and graphs for professional presentations.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to learn new database and software applications.

  • Ability to follow multiple, detailed directions of various protocols.

  • Excellent time management skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.

  • Working knowledge of PC operations and software applications such as MS Windows, Excel, Word, and Access required.

  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in public health, health communication, project management, or related discipline

  • Implementation research experience, interventional trial research or experience in large scale health initiatives

  • Cardiovascular disease research experience

  • Knowledge of medical terminology highly desired.

  • Experience with research protocols.

Starting Salary Range: $17.00 - $30.00 HRLY ($42,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
