Johns Hopkins University Program Specialist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Office of Leadership, Engagement, and Experiential Development seeks a creative, energetic and resourceful individual to develop and implement a wide variety of programs, majority of which occur on the Homewood campus as a Program Specialist - LEED (Student Services Administrator). This position supports the Leadership Engagement & Experiential Development (LEED) office’s student organization advisement and programming efforts. The Program Specialist is part of a professional staff team in Student Engagement, a unit within Student Life/Student Affairs.

The Program Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of a comprehensive set of campus-wide programs. This role supports the mission to enhance the undergraduate experience on campus, promote student engagement, and build community at Hopkins through our student centers, mainly focusing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. The program specialist reports to the assistant director of Leadership Engagement & Experiential Development and works with the assistant director to advise our primary student programming board and subsequent committees. Hallmarks of this position include the major traditions events that involve University leadership (i.e. President, Provosot, Board of Trustees, etc). and are seen as high priorities and moments of impact in the overall student experience.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Advising and Supervision:

  • Support the assistant director for Programming and other LEED professional staff with the overarching student programming board, and related committees, in program planning and leadership development, including the selection and training of new members and leadership.

  • Assist with and support programming and signature events of student organizations, supporting SGA Class Council programming and event planning activity throughout the year.

  • Serve as an advisor and liaison to a wide array of registered student organizations. Advise individual students and student groups in event planning and management about University policy and managing risk during University-sponsored events.

Program Development & Implementation:

  • Support and manage aspects of signature campus traditions events such as Blue Jay Opening Day, First/Last Day of Classes, Homewood Halloween, Lighting of the Quads, Commemoration Day, and large concerts.

  • Collaborate with staff and student groups conducting programming including Athletics, Residential Life, Diversity & Inclusion, Homewood Arts Programs, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Orientation & First-Year Experience, CHEW, Development and Alumni Relations, Dining Programs, etc.

  • Assess and mitigate potential risk factors associated with student and staff programs. Suggest policies and procedures updates and coordinate with the Chief Risk Officer as needed.

  • Provide appropriate interventions to stabilize situations, investigate and resolve concerns, and coordinate notifications using professional judgment and discretion.

  • Update and maintain the Event Planning Guide.

  • Create, develop, and maintain the online events calendar, the Leadership Engagement & Experiential Development website, and other social media.

Fiscal Management:

  • Manage and monitor budgets for signature campus traditions events totaling $120,000, including monthly budget reviews.

  • Support student programming board and advise specific committees on the responsible management of budget allocations totaling over $450,000, per University policy.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a trained staff represenstative for student protest and demonstration events.

  • Serve as a trained hazing investigator for the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life and Student Conduct, collectively.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree and three years’ related experience required.

  • Experience in programming and event planning in a higher education setting strongly preferred.

  • Master’s Degree in Student Personnel or related field preferred. Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the public with an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, student-oriented environment, with strong leadership and collaboration skills.

  • Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Ability to complete multiple complex projects at the same time.

JHU Equivalency Formula: _ 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job._
