Johns Hopkins University Medical Simulation Technician in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center is dedicated to supporting the growing use of simulation methodologies throughout medical education and professional practice. It provides consultative and supportive services for curriculum development, innovative instructional strategies, assessment methods, and faculty development in simulations for Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) and the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) as well as other Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) and Johns Hopkins University entities (Bayview Medical Center, School of Nursing, etc.) and external clients. The Simulation Center has a special interest in resuscitation, crisis resource management, and simulation-based research. In an effort to advance the science of medical education and patient safety, simulations are conducted within the Simulation Center and in the clinical environment (“in situ”).

We are seeking a Medical Simulation Technician who provides support for all simulation operations, including preparation, maintenance and repair of full-body patient simulators (software and hardware), task trainers and related multimedia peripherals.

The Medical Simulation Technician reports to the Simulation Operations Manager, and works closely with other Simulation staff as well as faculty, staff, and learners from throughout Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Health System. The position must have the ability to work outside normal work hours, including weekends, to meet business needs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The Medical Simulation Technician specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serves as simulator operator by creating, testing, and running scenarios with faculty instructors assuring that the simulator is in good working condition prior to the start of all simulations.

  • Maintains cleanliness of the Simulation Center

  • Manages the room set-up and clean-up for clinical simulations and debriefings; accountable for having the room props, equipment, and other resources prepared for the scheduled simulation activity

  • Works closely with faculty to ensure the smooth operation educational activities that involve organizing work flow in the Simulation Center

  • Provides information to faculty, staff, learners, and visitors concerning the functions of the Simulation Center

  • Meets with potential users of the Sim Center to identify resources, including but not limited to equipment, supplies, and space needed to accommodate teaching session

  • Utilizes online tools for schedules, training sessions, classes, workshops, and other activities

  • Maintains competence in bedside patient care equipment

  • Participates as needed at external/outer site simulation (in situ)

  • Coordinates equipment transport and teaching support for in situ events

  • Plays a role in simulation teaching when needed

  • Serves as backup to the Multimedia Services Manager for the use of digital media

  • Provides backup technical support for computer-based multimedia systems and their components, including operating digital camera, video cameras, monitors, LCD displays, and other equipment

  • Understands the use and operation of different simulator technologies ranging from anatomic models and task trainers to screen-based simulation to full-body patient simulators and virtual reality surgical simulators

  • Maintains proficiency in existing and emerging simulation technologies, including basic theory, design and implementation

  • Participates in technical training as necessary; attend conferences to stay current with simulation technology

  • Conducts routine inventory updates

  • Interfaces with the equipment manufacturers regarding equipment troubleshooting and systems problems; maintains record of repairs

  • Trains faculty and other Simulation Center staff in the operational aspects of simulation

  • Communicates in a positive, professional manner with faculty instructors, learners, and other users of the Simulation Center

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED and one year basic allied health experience required

  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours, including early morning, evening, and weekends

  • The Simulation Center strives to be a leader in teaching the importance of emergency readiness. The person who accepts this positon must become certified in and maintain certification in the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (i.e., CPR) as a provider and an instructor. Certification is not required at the acceptance of the positon, but must be attained by the first employment anniversary, and must be maintained thereafter at all times while employed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • EMT, CNA or similar allied health-related certification

  • Experience with medical simulation training

  • Experience supporting faculty in an academic environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in a stationary position

  • Must be able to move inside the work space to access equipment and traverse between different work spaces to support simulation activities or perform other duties

  • Must be able to operate, prepare, inspect, and repair equipment

  • Must be able to position self to maintain equipment

  • Must be able to lift materials weighing up to 40 pounds to and from overhead locations

  • Must be able to push/pull equipment up to 100 lbs

  • Must be able to kneel/bend to retrieve and move materials

Starting Salary Range: $18.86 - $25.93/hr (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
