Johns Hopkins University CO Physician Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

The Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases is seeking a Physician Assistant to work in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary health team to provide comprehensive care to outpatients in the Johns Hopkins AIDS Service County Program. Demonstrated ability in treating adults with HIV infection and adult primary care are prerequisites for this position.

The Physician Assistant practice in accordance with State Medical Board guidelines, the provider will evaluate chronic and acute illness, perform diagnostic procedures and tests, institute treatment and referrals, and provide patient education. These duties are performed in collaboration with the medical providers of the JHU County Program. The clinician will see patients in satellite clinics located within the county health department system and at the university HIV clinic, the John G. Bartlett Specialty Practice. Satellite health department sites include the surrounding counties of Baltimore and Western Maryland.

Clinical services involve 6 half-day sessions per week. This clinician will medically manage approximately 300-350 patients.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical-

  • Conducts comprehensive, acute health assessments of patients.

  • Obtains specimens from patients including blood, sputum and urine; orders or performs diagnostic tests such as ECG's, Holter monitors, x-rays.

  • Performs procedures such as starting intravenous lines, phlebotomy, incising abscesses, suturing wounds.

  • Establishes medical diagnoses, including psychosocial and cognitive problems.

  • Develops care/treatment plans for patients in consultation with the supervising physician.

  • Records and documents health assessment plans.

  • Writes orders for laboratory tests, medications, care plans, according to establishes procedures and protocol for review by the physician.

  • Provides instruction to patient and family members in health issues.

  • Regularly attends scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current knowledge of procedures, protocols and clinical care issues.

Administrative -

Assist medical director in day to day operations, budget, and report and grant preparation, attend program meetings.

Education and Training-

  • Assist in educational needs assessment activities.

  • Assist in curriculum and educational materials development

  • Precept health care providers and student practitioners.

Position involves on-site clinical work mixed with telemedicine, which can be done remotely. Position involves travel to clinics at our several county health departments in Maryland (Washington, Frederick, Howard, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford).

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Experience in HIV primary care is required. Experience in the management of drug dependency is desirable Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, radiology, microbiology, pathology and clinical medicine for use in clinical assessment and intervention.

  • Analytical ability necessary to evaluate health status of patient and to implement proper care plan.

  • Ability to work well as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team with a high degree of self-motivation and flexibility is essential.

  • Interpersonal, communication skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients. Ability to work well as a member of a health care team with a high degree of self-motivation.

  • Knowledge of computer-based application programs such as Microsoft Office and use of electronic medical record.

  • Experience in preceptor skills with health care providers and students.

  • Didactic and interactive teaching experience preferred.

  • Travel to various health facilities throughout the state of Maryland, transport patient records and educational materials.

  • Attend educational programs to enhance business management, grant preparation and supervisory training.

  • Successfully completes necessary background investigations per University requirements.

  • Completes and obtains necessary University, governmental credentials.

  • Fulfills all Clinical Practice association requirements.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Working Conditions:

Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous material, pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed. Travel to offsite satellite clinics are required personal transportation is required.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
