Johns Hopkins University CO Physician Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a CO Physician Assistant within the Department of Otolaryngology (Sinus). The Physician Assistant will work in an outpatient clinic setting both independently (after a period of supervised training and skills acquisition) and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary health team focused on providing comprehensive care to Sinus patients. After a period of supervised training and skills acquisition, they will work to diagnose and treat patients with a variety of work in an outpatient clinic setting both independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary health team. They will work to diagnose and treat patients with a variety of conditions including sinusitis, nasal obstructions, nasal tumors, nodules, skull-based conditions, and smell disorders. This individual will be responsible for making independent decisions regarding patient care and must exercise professional judgment and decision-making.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a physician, and in accordance with established policies, the Physician Assistant will evaluate patient’s health status through diagnostic procedures and tests.

  • Provides therapeutic patient care under direction of physician and in accordance with established protocols.

  • Provide timely and high-quality Otolaryngology consultation services of inpatients at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and outpatients at the clinic.

  • Service team in completing patientcare and administrative task.

  • Refinement of protocols and monitoring of quality and clinical outcomes towards service improvement; completion of perioperative, order sets and discharge instructions.

  • Clinic-based evaluation and management of patients with symptoms of Nasal and sinus conditions.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, patient family members and all members of the interdisciplinary health care team.

  • After a period of supervised training able to competently perform nasal and sinus procedures requiring use of required instruments.

  • Will learn and apply knowledge of nasal and sinus conditions and disorders.

  • Function effectively in a fluid, dynamic and rapidly changing environment.

  • Will be self-directed and possess mature judgment and motivation.

  • Able to communicate clearly in verbally and in written form.

  • After a period of training will efficiently use the Epic electronic medical record system.

  • Sonogram will also be a routine part of daily practice.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • A comprehensive understanding of clinical and/or surgical procedures, patient care procedures, medical protocols and testing procedures.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, psychology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, radiology, microbiology and pathology.

  • The analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine health status of patient and implement proper care plan.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients and work in teams with physician attending, residents and nursing; instruct health care personnel on procedures and treatment.

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate patient history, physical examination findings and laboratory values, and makes preliminary diagnosis of patients for review by physician.

  • Will complete all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.

  • Works in patient care areas in Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center.

  • Exposure to hazards due to infectious specimen and contagious diseases, but potential for harm or personal injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to concentrate during surgical procedure while assisting physician.

  • Ability to walk throughout hospital plan to assess and deliver care to inpatients on all services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body.

  • Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program.

  • Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.

  • Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The position is almost exclusively focused on nasal and sinus conditions, and prior training and experience in these disciplines.

  • Some related experience in an Otolaryngology and/or procedure-oriented surgical field.

  • History of strong organizational skills, analytical skills, customer service skills, clinical sensitivity, medical terminology, excellent computer skills and the ability to multi-task.

  • High level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent communication, mathematical computation, spelling, and grammar skills.

  • Knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).

  • Experience in the Johns Hopkins system.

  • Bilingual Spanish.

  • Prior experience with ultrasound.

Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the credentialing process is required prior to start date
